€7.5 Million Boost for Kingston Sports Development in Major Government Funding Announcement

Plans for a major multi-sport development at Kingston have received a huge boost after the Government approved up to €7.5 million for An Tús Kingston Park.

The funding was announced by Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage James Browne as part of a landmark €409 million investment in towns and cities across Ireland.

For Galway Bay Rugby Club, and for sport on the west side of Galway generally, the Kingston announcement is particularly significant.

Galway City Council’s An Tús Kingston Park proposal has been approved for up to €7.5 million and, crucially, has been placed in Category 1B of the new Towns and Cities Regeneration Investment Fund.

Category 1B – capable of being on-site by September 2027

Category 1B is for projects which can be delivered in the short term, with the Government stating that these projects can be on-site by September 2027.

That distinction is important. Kingston has not simply received funding for another feasibility study or long-term masterplan; it has been included among the projects being targeted for short-term delivery.

 

A major opportunity for four Galway sports

The proposed Kingston development could provide a new sporting base benefiting Galway Bay Rugby Club, Galway Bohemians Football Club, Connacht Hockey and Galway City Rapparees GAA Rounders Club.

The project would bring rugby, soccer, hockey and GAA Rounders together within one major multi-sport development, creating badly needed additional sporting infrastructure on the west side of Galway.

For Galway Bay Rugby, the development could be transformative.

The club has grown considerably in recent years, particularly through its underage structures, but the availability of pitches and facilities remains one of the biggest challenges facing that continued growth.

Kingston offers the possibility of something Galway Bay Rugby has been working towards for years: a genuine long-term home for the club.

Under the proposed shared model, Galway Bay Rugby would have its own part of the development while sharing the wider Kingston facilities with the other sporting organisations.

That would give the club the security and infrastructure needed to continue developing rugby in Knocknacarra and the wider west Galway area.

Up to €7.5 million for Kingston

The scale of the announcement is significant.

The Government’s official list of approved projects names “An Tús Kingston Park”, under Galway City Council, as a Category 1B project with approximately €7.5 million in maximum funding available.

It comes as part of Minister Browne’s wider €409 million regeneration announcement for towns and cities around the country.

A major step forward for sport in Galway

There is still work to be done before the development becomes a reality, but this announcement is a major milestone for everyone involved in the Kingston project.

For Galway Bay Rugby, Galway Bohemians, Connacht Hockey and Galway City Rapparees, the prospect of a high-quality shared sports development at Kingston has moved another significant step closer.

With up to €7.5 million approved and the project included in the short-term Category 1B programme, this is a very positive day for sport on the west side of Galway.
