Galway Bay Rugby National School Tag Blitz a Huge Success

9 September, 2025 Events - Galway Bay Rugby, U10 Mini Rugby, U11 Mini Rugby

🏉 Galway Bay Rugby National School Tag Blitz a Huge Success 🏉

The pitches in Dangan were alive with energy and excitement as over 250 children from across Galway City took part in the
Galway Bay Rugby National School Tag Blitz, proudly run in association with Connacht Rugby.

The blitz brought together 3rd and 4th class pupils for a fun-filled day of tag rugby, showcasing not only the skills of the players but also the spirit of teamwork and community that rugby is all about.

Participating Schools

  • Scoil Íde – 60 pupils
  • Scoil Iognáid – 120 pupils
  • St John the Apostle – 30 pupils
  • Scoil Shéamais Naofa – 40 pupils

The event was expertly organised by the Connacht Rugby Club & Community staff:
Wendy (Women’s Rugby Development Officer South Connacht),
Claire (Galway City Development Officer),
Diarmuid (University of Galway RDO),
and Emmet (Galway Bay CDO). They were ably supported by enthusiastic
Transition Year students from the Jes and the Bish, who took on refereeing and mentoring roles to ensure the day ran smoothly.

From the first whistle to the last, the focus was firmly on participation, fun, and learning new skills. The laughter of the children and the energy on the field showed just how much the players enjoyed their introduction to rugby. For many, it was their first taste of the sport, and it’s safe to say plenty left Dangan eager to play more.

“Days like this are what rugby is all about – kids running around with smiles on their faces, making friends, and learning the game in a safe, fun environment.
The partnership between schools, Connacht Rugby, and our own volunteers shows the huge potential for growth in the game across Galway.
We want these kids to feel rugby is their sport.”

– Christian Short, Director of Rugby, Galway Bay Rugby

The Galway Bay Rugby Club would like to thank all the schools, teachers, Connacht Rugby staff, and student volunteers who made the day such a success.
With smiles all around and plenty of tries scored, the future of rugby in the city looks very bright.

📅 Next Up – Club Open Day

Galway Bay Rugby are inviting everyone to their Open Day this Saturday in St Mary’s.
It’s a chance to meet the coaches, try out rugby in a fun setting, and find out how to get involved with one of the fastest-growing clubs in the city.
All are welcome!
